Medal for Gallantry (1876)
Two weeks after the outbreak of the 1876-1878 Serbo-Turkish War for Independence , Prince Milan IV founded a silver medal “For Gallantry”, to boost the troops’ morale and award acts of bravery. A higher, golden class of the medal followed a year later. Medals were awarded upon commanding officer’s recommendation, or by Princes motu proprio. Corps commandares were allowed to award the silver medal on their own initiative, pending Prince’s formal approval.
